
A dog stops halfway along a walk, lowers its head and starts cropping grass with the unhurried deliberation of a small cow. The owner’s first thought is almost always the same: something is wrong, and the dog is dosing itself. That explanation is one of the most durable pieces of folk knowledge in dog ownership, repeated in puppy classes and printed in training books. It is also, on the evidence that exists, largely wrong.
Grass eating is close to universal in dogs with access to a lawn or a verge. It is not rare, not usually a symptom, and not a habit that needs stamping out. What deserves attention is the narrow set of circumstances in which grazing signals a real problem, and the hazards that sit on the grass rather than in it.
What owner surveys actually found
The most frequently cited research comes from survey work at the University of California, Davis, which asked owners of plant-eating dogs what they observed immediately before and after the behaviour. The pattern was consistent and thoroughly unhelpful to the folk theory. Only a small minority of dogs showed any sign of illness beforehand, and only a minority vomited afterwards. The great majority ate grass while apparently well and carried on being well.
A second finding cuts against the self-medication idea more sharply still. Younger dogs ate plants more often than older dogs, and were less likely to vomit when they did. If grazing were a strategy for clearing an upset stomach, the age pattern would run the other way. Puppies are not, as a group, more nauseated than middle-aged dogs. They are more exploratory.
The distinction matters, because grass eating is one of the most common reasons owners start looking at digestive products in the first place. Probiotic Dog Chews and similar complementary feeds are often bought on the assumption that grazing indicates an unsettled stomach in need of settling. In a dog that is otherwise bright, eating normally and passing normal stools, there is little in the behaviour itself to support that assumption.
The caveats deserve stating rather than glossing over. Owner surveys depend on retrospective recall, and owners are not neutral observers of their own dogs. Mild nausea is invisible, because a dog that feels queasy has no way of reporting it. So the honest conclusion is not that nausea is never involved. It is that nausea cannot be the general explanation.
Foraging, fibre, and what grass actually offers
The domestic dog descends from an omnivorous scavenger, and scavengers eat plants. Analyses of wolf and coyote faeces routinely turn up grass in a meaningful proportion of samples, in animals with no shortage of prey. The behaviour carries almost no cost, so there has never been much selection pressure against it. Eating grass is not, in itself, evidence that anything has gone wrong.
Grass is mostly cellulose, and dogs produce no cellulase. What breakdown occurs happens through bacterial fermentation in the large intestine, and a dog’s hindgut is far less capable of that than a ruminant’s. Grass is close to useless as food. That does not make it useless as fibre: indigestible plant material adds bulk, holds water and influences how fast gut contents move.
The clinical literature contains case reports of individual dogs whose long-standing daily grazing stopped after a switch to a higher-fibre diet. Those are single cases rather than trials, but they suggest that in a dog with an entrenched habit, fibre is worth raising with a vet before assuming the behaviour is psychological.
Boredom, attention, and the loop owners build by accident
Dogs left alone in gardens for long stretches graze more than dogs with company and occupation. That is unsurprising. Grass is the only thing in most gardens that is renewable, textured and interesting to a mouth.
The attention loop is subtler and more common than owners realise. A dog starts eating grass. The owner, worried, hurries across the lawn, says the dog’s name and lifts the head by the collar. From the dog’s point of view, a low-value activity has just produced proximity, touch and conversation. Repeat that a few dozen times and grazing becomes a reliable way of summoning a human. Owners who instead recall the dog quietly to something better generally see the frequency fall within a fortnight.
Taste, texture and the spring flush
Dogs are visibly selective about which grass they eat, walking past one patch and working carefully at another, often young growth at the base of a hedge. That selectivity is not consistent with an animal trying to make itself vomit, which would take any grass at all.
There is a straightforward agronomic reason for the seasonality many owners notice. New spring growth is high in water and soluble sugars and low in lignin, the tough structural compound that accumulates as grass matures. Young grass is sweeter, softer and easier to chew. Grazing tailing off as the sward coarsens through summer fits that better than any illness-based explanation.
When grass eating genuinely is worth investigating
The behaviour that should prompt a second look is not casual, selective cropping. It is frantic, indiscriminate gulping: a dog tearing at long coarse grass, swallowing without chewing, moving urgently from patch to patch. Appearing suddenly in a dog that never previously bothered with grass, that is a different phenomenon entirely.
It rarely arrives alone. Repeated swallowing, exaggerated lip licking, drooling, restlessness, or the stretched posture with chest down and hindquarters raised that vets sometimes call the prayer position. Those are nausea and abdominal discomfort signs, and the grass is a response to them rather than a cause. Gastro-oesophageal reflux, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, gastritis and chronic inflammatory enteropathy can all present this way.
One pattern is worth recognising specifically. Some dogs vomit yellow bile in the early morning after a long gap without food, and gulp grass beforehand. This is often called bilious vomiting syndrome, and it frequently responds to nothing more complicated than splitting the daily ration so the stomach is never empty for as long.
The real risks are on the grass, not in it
Almost every genuine danger associated with grass eating comes from what has been applied to the grass, or from what is living on it. The grass itself is inert.
Lawn treatments are the obvious category. Selective herbicides, weed-and-feed products and fertilisers are applied at concentrations intended for plants, not for an animal cropping the treated surface. Most labels specify a period during which pets should be kept off, usually until the product has dried or been watered in, and that is the instruction worth following. Verges, playing fields and arable margins are treated too, sometimes without signage.
Slug and snail bait is more acutely dangerous. Metaldehyde, the traditional active ingredient, is severely toxic to dogs and causes tremors, twitching, unsteadiness, raised body temperature and seizures within an hour or two of ingestion. Outdoor use of metaldehyde pellets has been banned across Great Britain, which reduces but does not remove the risk, since old stock lingers in sheds for years. Ferric phosphate replacements are safer but not inert, and any dog that has eaten slug bait needs a call to the practice rather than a wait-and-see approach.
Heaped grass clippings are a less publicised hazard. Along with compost and windfall fruit, they grow moulds producing tremorgenic mycotoxins, and dogs that raid a heap can develop severe tremors.
Lungworm: why grass matters more in Britain than it used to
Angiostrongylus vasorum, commonly called lungworm, is carried by slugs and snails. Dogs become infected by swallowing them, sometimes deliberately and often accidentally while eating grass, drinking from an outdoor bowl or picking up a toy left on the lawn overnight. Larvae are also shed into slug and snail slime, so a dog does not necessarily have to eat the mollusc itself.
The distribution has changed. Infection was historically concentrated in the south of England and south Wales, and cases are now reported across a far wider area of the UK, including Scotland. Adult worms live in the heart and pulmonary vessels, and the disease can be fatal if it is missed.
The signs are frustratingly varied. Coughing and reduced exercise tolerance are common, but so is a bleeding tendency, because the parasite interferes with normal clotting. Prolonged bleeding from a small cut, unexplained bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding into the white of the eye or blood in the urine can all be presenting signs. Some dogs show only lethargy, weight loss or altered behaviour.
Two practical points follow. Lungworm is treatable with prescription antiparasitic medication, and dogs generally do well when it is caught. But routine worming does not necessarily cover it, because many common wormers have no activity against Angiostrongylus. Whether a dog needs lungworm cover, and how often, is a question for a vet who knows the local picture, and no supplement or home measure substitutes for that conversation.
Grass seeds and awns in summer
From late May through September, seeding grasses present a mechanical hazard that has nothing to do with eating. Barley grass and related species produce awns, dart-shaped seed heads covered in backward-facing barbs that let the seed travel in one direction only. Once it starts moving through tissue it cannot reverse out.
Awns lodge between toes, inside ear canals, under eyelids and up nostrils, and can migrate surprisingly far. The presentations are sudden: violent sneezing fits starting mid-walk, frantic head shaking, or obsessive licking of one paw with a swelling between the pads. Removal often requires sedation, and delay makes it harder. Prevention is mechanical. Check paws, ears and armpits after walks in long grass, keep the feathering between the pads trimmed, and avoid seeding field margins in high summer.
When to speak to your vet
Relaxed, routine grazing in a well dog does not need a consultation. The following do:
- Grass eating that begins suddenly in an adult dog that never grazed before
- Frantic gulping alongside drooling, repeated swallowing or exaggerated lip licking
- Vomiting that continues after the grass has come back up
- Blood in vomit or faeces, or stools that are black and tarry
- Coughing, breathlessness, or a dog tiring far sooner than usual
- Prolonged bleeding from a small wound, unexplained bruising or nosebleeds
- Sudden sneezing fits, violent head shaking or persistent licking of one paw in summer
- Tremors, twitching, unsteadiness or seizures, which are an emergency
Living with a grass eater
For most dogs the correct response is to do very little about the grazing and rather more about the ground. Know what has been applied to the lawn and when. Keep slug bait, old and new, out of reach entirely. Bag clippings rather than heaping them. Check the dog over, paws included, after summer walks in long grass.
Keep a rough note for a fortnight if the habit is new: frequency, time of day, whether it comes before or after meals, and whether the dog seems otherwise itself. That record is far more useful to a vet than a general impression, and it usually reassures the owner too.
Talk to a vet about lungworm cover specifically, not worming in general. And treat sudden, frantic, out-of-character grazing as information worth acting on. That is the one situation where the old folk theory points roughly the right way, even though it gets the mechanism wrong.
